NFL Rankings Now Updated Daily

The daily version of my NFL rankings is now up and running. These rankings check the latest point spreads each morning and update accordingly, with the explicit goal of deriving what the betting market thinks is each team's true strength. If my model was perfect, you could duplicate the point spread of any matchup by taking the difference of the two team's GPF (Generic Points Favored) and adding 2.5 points for home field advantage.

For additional background, refer to these posts:

Also, my backend database for these rankings is a a Google Docs spreadsheet, which doesn't always cooperate. If anybody is having trouble getting the rankings to load, feel free to shoot me an email, or leave a comment below.

  1. It's interesting how these spread-based rankings are different from the performance-based rankings that Burke has up. San Francisco (4th-22nd) and Chicago (7th-27th) are much lower on his list, while the Jets (29th-7th) are way higher on his list. I'm curious to see if the spread slow to change in the face of evidence, or ANS is overreacting to recent events.

    1. Oh, I forgot to ask - do you do special stuff for the game in London, or is it just Vikings home game?

    2. For my modeling, I assume London games are neutral site games.

I believe the ANS model regresses the stats early in the season, so they at least try to avoid over-reaction. I imagine we'll find by season-end that it will be a mixed bag as to which ranking was more on target.

  2. Yeah, the rankings aren't loading for me. I can see the rankings from Saturday's post, but not the daily ones. This is a pretty awesome site, though. Keep up the great work!
